Water has a magical way of captivating the human spirit. For time immemorial it has drawn explorers, mystics, and weekend warriors to its shores in search of adventure, reflection, or some good ol’ fashioned fun.

Enter La Crosse, Wisconsin, a booming college town on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. If there was ever a place for water lovers to unite, this is it! Not only does it sit on the United States’ largest river, it is also home to the Black River, the La Crosse River, Blue Lake, Target Lake, Lake Onalaska, Lake Neshonoc, the Root River, and so much more.

With so much to offer, it can be hard knowing where to begin.

You can start simple by grabbing a bite to eat at one of the many amazing restaurants that dot the banks of the area’s rivers and lakes. Then you can grab your canoe or kayak, or rent one locally, and follow one of the many paddling trails that crisscross the greater La Crosse area.

Looking for even more action? Then it’s time to grab your rod and reel and head out for some world-class bass and panfish fishing. There is a reason the region is home to the giant Sunny the Sunfish statue. Finally, if you love the idea of a day on the water but do not yet have your own gear, then La Crosse has plenty of options to rent it all.

Dining

Looking for a bite to eat with a view? Then you’ve come to the right place! La Crosse offers everything from fine dining to the traditional Wisconsin supper club experience, all with beautiful views of the water.

Huck Finn’s On The Water

Voted “La Crosse’s Best Outdoor Dining”, Huck Finn’s is a local institution. Relax on the river overlooking North Bay Marina and enjoy their famous Herb Lemonade or Bloody Mary’s. Then get ready for mouth watering burgers, juicy steaks, and fresh walleye.

The Waterfront Restaurant and Tavern

Waterfront Restaurant and Tavern offers fine dining with arguably downtown La Crosse’s best riverfront patio. Get ready for an unforgettable meal, superb service, excellent wine, and hopefully a stunning sunset to
top it all off!

Sullivan’s Supper Club

Enjoy classic dining along the Mississippi River and immerse yourself in Wisconsin’s Supper Club tradition at Sullivan’s Supper Club. If you’re lucky, you can enjoy some classics like their shrimp dinner or a savory Filet Mignon on their coveted patio.

Pettibone Boat Club

Did somebody say Tiki Bar? Pettibone Boat Club, with their expansive patio and one-of-a-kind tiki bar, is definitely worth a stop. The patio offers 270 degree views of the Mississippi River and great burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and one-of-a-kind fresh fish.

Paddling Trails

There is no better way to explore a river town than by paddling its water trails. La Crosse is home to numerous options including the Black River Trail, Goose Island Paddling Trail, La Crosse River Paddling Trail, and the Lake Onalaska Canoe Trail.

Black River Trail

A great way to spend the day is on the Black River around French Island. You can grab a bite to eat at Huck Finn’s, rent your preferred water craft from Island Outdoors, and then enjoy a leisurely paddle up and down the Black River. If you really want to go all out, paddle across the river to Moxie’s Tiki Bar for a Rum Runner or Mojito!

Goose Island Canoe Trail

Goose Island County Park serves as the trailhead for the seven-mile Goose Island Canoe Trail. The full trail takes about 4–5 hours to complete and winds through the scenic Mississippi River backwaters. The fishing is amazing, and the views are breathtaking.

Goose Island County Park also hosts the county’s largest campground, a general store, and canoe rentals. Unlike the Black River Trail, this is a B.Y.O.B. destination.

Lake Onalaska Canoe Trail

Another great option is the relatively new Lake Onalaska Canoe Trail. It takes you through the Mississippi backwaters into Lake Onalaska. The trip from Lytle’s Landing to Fred Funk Landing takes about four miles, and it is another three miles to Mosey’s Landing, home to the local legend, Red Pines Bar and Grill.

Fishing

There is no better feeling than casting a line across the water, apart from casting said line and feeling a bite! La Crosse’s unique location in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area results in quality fishing to excite almost any angler. Whether you are after bass, sunfish, walleye, or even trout, the area boasts plentiful populations.

Bass Fishing on the Mississippi River

There is a reason the area hosts countless bass fishing tournaments each year, and it’s not because of the beautiful views and great restaurants. It is the high quality largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing that draws in the crowds. But you don’t have to be a competitive angler to land a lunker. Given the productivity of the river and its backwaters, beautiful fish can be found by even the most novice angler.

Pan Fishing on Lake Onalaska and Lake Neshonoc

If you’ve ever stopped at the Lake Onalaska Overlook, then you’ve come across Sunny the “Giant” Sunfish. The reason the city hosts a 15-foot tall giant sunfish statue is because it has been named the “Sunfish Capital of the World.”

Any parent with young kids knows that all it takes is some wax worms, a bobber, and some hungry sunnies to keep kids interested. Just make sure you’re paying attention, as the local panfish grow to healthy sizes and you won’t want to let them get away!

Fly Fishing in Root River

While not as well-known as the area’s bass and panfish angling, the Driftless Area hosts some of the best fly-fishing in southern Minnesota and Wisconsin. If you are looking for a unique fishing experience, then grab your fly rod and head out onto one of the area’s many trout streams, including the famous Root River.

Boat Rentals

Don’t worry. You don’t have to have your own boat to enjoy all that La Crosse has to offer. There are a number of rental options in the La Crosse area that can outfit you with either a powerboat or human-powered vessel.

Pontoons and Fishing Boats – Does your idea of a great day on the water involve cruising around in a pontoon or fishing the backwaters with the speed and comfort of a fishing boat? Then check out one of the La Crosse area’s premier boat rental companies.

Schafer’s River Rentals

Schafer’s rents everything. From pontoons and fishing boats to canoes and kayaks, they have it all. If fishing, be sure to stop in their bait shop for up-to-date fishing reports and a great selection of lures and bait.

American Marine

American Marine isn’t just a watercraft showroom. They also rent a wide variety of pontoon boats with tubing, skiing, wakeboarding, and wakeskating packages. Best part? They are located right at Huck Finn’s, so you can grab a bite to eat and a cool drink once your water-based adventure is complete!

Design a Cruise

Not sure if you are ready to captain your own vessel? Then head over to Design a Cruise and let Captain Bob do it for you. He’ll plan everything, from fishing trips to sightseeing tours, all aboard his double-deck twin-engine pontoon. Bob also serves as a part-time captain on the La Crosse Queen, so he knows his way around a ship!

Canoes, Kayaks, and SUPs – Would you rather enjoy the serenity of the river without the hum of an outboard engine? Then a canoe, kayak, or stand up paddleboard is your best bet.

Island Outdoors

Island Outdoors is a proper outfitter. They rent everything from canoes and kayaks to stand up paddleboards and hydrobikes. They also sell all the gear you could even need for a successful day on the water.

Neshonoc Lakeside Campground

Neshonoc Lakeside Campground is an excellent home-base for exploring Lake Neshonoc. In addition to traditional camping amenities, they also rent kayaks, canoes, and motorboats. The campground also has a heated pool and hot tub.

KayoeSUP

If you are looking to try stand-up paddleboarding, then check out KayoeSUP. They rent a variety of different SUP models and offer highly-rated classes for all ability levels. SUPing is the fastest growing watersport in the world, and for good reason.

So there you have it. A trip to the La Crosse area isn’t complete without some time on, or at least near, the water. Whether you are an avid angler, outdoor watersports enthusiast, or just looking for a drink with a view, you’re bound to find something!

Explore La Crosse hosted Ambassador, Matthew Crawford, in to the La Crosse Region during late June. He had his chance to catch Bass, Panfish, Walleye, Catfish, and Freshwater Drum.

Written By: Matthew Crawford

My experience fishing in La Crosse has proven to me time and time again, you simply don’t need access to a boat to catch fish. I can’t name a better area in Wisconsin for fishing from shore, as public water access can be found just about anywhere along the Mississippi River. A few key spots come to mind though, such as Pettibone Park and the Lake Onalaska Dam. These spots aren’t just for the angling-obsessed fisherman like myself, they offer easy access to plentiful fish populations, making for a fun time outdoors for the whole family. More information about how I catch fish at these locations can be found below.

Pettibone Park

Located directly across from Riverside Park, Pettibone Park offers opportunities to fish not only on the shoreline of the Mississippi River but in Pettibone Lagoon, a family-friendly feature of the park. Panfish and Bass are the most common fish found in Pettibone Lagoon, with multiple fishing piers available for easy access. If the piers are occupied, the lagoon has long stretches of open shoreline to cast a line in. When fishing in the weedy shallows of Pettibone Lagoon, single-hooked presentations like a soft plastic worm or weedless topwater lures are the way to go. However, make a short walk over to the main river channel of the mighty Mississippi, and you’d be better off using deeper diving crankbaits and jerkbaits, or even lipless crankbaits that can be vertically jigged along the river bottom. This is where you’ll have your best shot at fish that prefer deeper water, such as Walleye, Freshwater Drum, Catfish, and even Northern Pike.

Onalaska Dam:

Further north, the Mississippi River widens into Lake Onalaska, a hotspot for fishing in the La Crosse region. This is your best bet for some multi-species fun, as the dam acts as a gathering space for large predatory fish chasing their next meal. This is a spot for more adventurous anglers, as the water access is limited to rocky shorelines. You might even find it possible to fish on top of the dam itself if the water level is low enough. This is a great location to target panfish in the calm water along the rocky shorelines, and large predatory fish such as Northern Pike are usually close by. Baits that imitate minnows such as small jerkbaits and crankbaits are among my favorites to use at the Onalaska Dam, as minnows are the primary food source for the bigger fish at this location.

Final Thoughts:

La Crosse is not only a great area to fish for a wide variety of fish species, but it also allows anglers the chance to use many different fishing techniques. To stock up on the best bait and tackle for fishing in the La Crosse region, check out Island Outdoors on French Island. The staff there are more than willing to offer advice on fish location and behavior during your visit. With plenty of public fishing access along the river, even those without a boat have a great chance to catch fish in La Crosse and the surrounding area. When you need to refuel after a good day of fishing, I’d recommend stopping at Moxie’s, an excellent American-style restaurant and bar along the riverbank in La Crosse. On your way out of town, make sure to snap a pic with Sunny The Sunfish in Onalaska, a notable landmark that’s well worth visiting before you depart.

La Crosse Lunker League

Fishing is an excellent choice of outdoor activity to partake in if you happen to have some time to spend in the great outdoors in La Crosse. If you want to add an extra element of excitement to your fishing, you can join the La Crosse Lunker League

It’s simple. Catch a qualifying species in the La Crosse area, take some pictures for size and memories, release your fish, and submit your catch! You’ll be notified when your catch has been approved and you can see the awards you’ve gained. There are goals, milestones, and various awards to be won.

Lunker League is open to both residents and visitors. It’s a fun way to challenge yourself and possibly win some cool awards!

Five Ways to Enjoy the Full La Crosse Region Experience

The La Crosse Region bursts with adventure and an abundance of great outdoor resources and opportunities, amazing food, arts and culture, and stunning views for you and your entourage to enjoy.

Adventure by Bike or Foot

With a Region as beautiful as this, it is easy to want to submerge yourself in nature. A perfect way to burn off some energy is with a quick stroll on one of the many great trails in the area. The Great River State Trail, La Crosse River Trail, and Three Rivers Trail are great options for easy walking or biking with beautiful scenery along each route. If you’re looking for something challenging, you can find more difficult terrain, climbs, features, and scenic lookouts at the Hixon Forest Trails and La Crosse Blufflands Trails. And if you’re looking to bring your furry friend along, be sure to check out pet-friendly locations throughout the La Crosse Region.

If road cycling is more your style, you’re sure to enjoy numerous routes that highlight the area, which offers some of the best bicycling in the Midwest. The Region provides both easy, in-town rides and moderate or hard routes to get the blood flowing through some of the area’s biggest hills and bluffs! If you’re up to the task, ride the Apple Blossom Scenic Route for views well worth the bluff-side grind.

Waterway Expeditions

Want to skip the pavement? The summer cooldown and adventure are endless when you hit the many famous waterways of the La Crosse Region. Rent a kayak or canoe to enjoy the crisp waters of Lake Onalaska or the river lands. Launch your boat at one of the many Region’s landings and escape down the famous Mississippi River. Did you know the Mississippi River sandbar islands are free to camp on? Bring your crew and make some Driftless Region memories along the banks.

In addition, summertime fishing in the La Crosse Region can be one of the most exciting fishing experiences anglers have all year, no matter the species you seek. Fish are much more predictable and their metabolism is increased under the warm water conditions causing them to feed more. Heart pounding topwater for big northern pike and bass in backwaters, walleye near fly fishing the pristine trout streams, and filling the livewell with slab crappies and bluegills are all phenomenal options during the summer months in the Region.

Can’t Miss Landmarks & Sights

Did you know that there are over 25 public art pieces throughout the La Crosse Region? If you’re not one for water or woods, viewing the many murals and sculptures in the area provides the perfect walk. Not sure where to start? Historic Downtown La Crosse is filled with murals on the side of historic buildings and parking ramps and lovely walks stocked with sculptures as you work your way closer to Riverside Park. Create your bucket list of public art and get inspired!

Hike up or drive to Grandad Bluff in La Crosse and enjoy views of the Mississippi River, La Crosse, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. It comes as no surprise that Wisconsin Trails readers voted this “the most scenic view in the state”. This landmark features a shelter house, coin-operated binoculars, trails, and picnic areas for you to enjoy the signature sights to the fullest. Onalaska poses two great landmarks as well. The Great River Road runs into the Great River Landing, famous for its natural beauty, culture, and friendly atmosphere. The Landing serves as the trailhead for the Great River State Trail which connects over 100 miles of state bicycle trails and is local to businesses offering unique cuisine and shopping. Continuing north along the Great River Road will lead you to Sunny the Sunfish, a well-known Onalaska sculpture that offers a perfect photo op for you and your crew.

At the confluence of three rivers, Riverside Park is a stunning haven near Downtown La Crosse. The park is designed for active visitors and for those who just want to watch the river coast by. Riverside Park is home to the La Crosse Queen which offers visitors a paddlewheeler cruise on the Mississippi River to experience all its majesty. At the North end of the park, guests can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the International Friendship Garden. Bursting with flowers, unique plant-life, a koi pond, and river views, it is a must-see oasis.

Family + Fun = Fishing In La Crosse

Written By: Jim Crowley

I’ve been traveling to the La Crosse Region for a few years now and it’s an ideal destination if you’ve been thinking about family fun! When I first arrived, my first stop was to check in at Island Outdoors. The renowned store has everything from live bait and the latest fishing tackle to local knowledge and fishing information. Island Outdoors also rents out a comfortable cabin directly across the street from their storefront where you can stay with boat parking. The location is conveniently located near local eateries, gas stations and is very close to one of the many public boat ramps that the La Crosse area has to offer anglers.

Bass Fishing with Adam Christianson

Next stop; meet up with Adam Christianson of Adrenaline Angling Guide Service. Adam is a fully-licensed and insured USCG Captain. As he has lived in the La Crosse, WI area his entire life, he has become a well-rounded, multi-species angler who always knows what’s biting and where those fish are at.  Additionally, he loves to fish with kids and his boat will easily accommodate up to a family of four.  The mission of our trip was to spend a morning chasing the white bass and crappie that are overly abundant on the Mississippi River in the La Crosse Region.

White bass are notorious for hard strikes and fast paced action and they did not disappoint! Adam had us on fish in no time and my first thought was how much fun kids would have with this fast and furious bite and these hard pulling fish.  Honestly, I was smiling from ear to ear, and I have been doing this for more than a few years. I felt like a kid again! Adam has all the gear you need so this can be an easy, fun and entertaining day of fishing for your family.

Afterward, we changed gears and went after crappie, which are always fun to catch for any angler. As Adam stated, “Sometimes the crappies will hit a variety of lures and sometimes they want a simple minnow under a small bobber. I have all clients need to catch these tasty fish.”  We caught plenty of them as well and had a great time telling fishing stories while enjoying the beautiful weather and scenic views that the La Crosse area is known for.

More Things To Do In The Region

The La Crosse Region has plenty of places to stay, restaurants to choose from and exciting things for your family to do. We finished our trip with a La Crosse Loggers baseball game. A large crowd enjoyed the action, the great brats and family fun at a local baseball game.  It does not get much better than that.

The region surrounding La Crosse, Wisconsin has a lot to offer the avid outdoor adventure seekers.

Its expansive bluffs, miles of trails, and endless array of water are all draws to the area. It wouldn’t be fair to mention this area’s outdoor connections and not talk about its laundry list of fishing opportunities. La Crosse has prospects for all types, no matter an angler’s preference, experience level, or the current season – including opportunities for conventional fishing or fly fishing, as well as the chance to fish from shore, from a boat, or on the ice.

The area boasts healthy populations of panfish, walleye, trout, catfish, and bass to name a few. As a premier fishing destination, the area attracts anglers from all over including several major tournament trails, such as Bassmaster and Major League Fishing.

Perhaps the most well-known body of water in the La Crosse region is the Mississippi River. Three pools of the Mighty Miss are located within close proximity to this region – Pools 7, 8, and 9 which also encompass the popular lake Onalaska. Two major tributaries of the Mississippi River in this region include the Black River and La Crosse River – all of which meet at the City of La Crosse. Beyond the major river systems, this portion of the State is also home to the world renowned Driftless region which boasts healthy populations of brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout.

Countless miles of fishable water are available in this region. Regardless of how you want to fish, there are options for you. They can be accessed from shore, from the water, or from some truly unique locations.

The Shore Options

Don’t have a boat? Not to worry. The La Crosse Region has many access points for shoreline anglers.

Pettibone Park

If you’re looking for family friendly, Pettibone Park is one of the best options in the region. Located on Pettibone Lagoon, a backwater of the Mississippi River, the park has several access options including docks, piers, and shorelines. The area hosts a healthy population of panfish, as well as the chance for bass and pike.

Goose Island Campground & Park

The Goose Island Campground & Park is located just three miles south of the City of La Crosse on the shores of the Mississippi River. The park is the largest county campground in the State of Wisconsin with more than 300 campsites. The area offers more than 2.5 miles of fishable shoreline.

Copeland Park

Copeland Park is located on the north side of La Crosse – just east of French Island – on the Black River. The park offers a stretch of access for shoreline angling. As the home to the Copeland Park baseball facility, the park gives anglers the chance to cheer on the local La Crosse Loggers baseball team while enjoying a night of fishing.

The Driftless Region

If cold water species are more your style, then this area is worth checking out. The Driftless refers to the area of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois that was left untouched by glacial erosion during the last Ice Age. This unique area offers some of the best trout fishing opportunities in the country – with more tan 13,000 miles of streams. These streams have impressive numbers of brown trout, brook trout, and rainbow trout with recent surveys showing 2,500 fish per mile. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website has detailed maps and tools to help track down stream locations and access points.

Other Areas

In addition to the number of park facilities throughout La Crosse, there are also several other areas that fishermen can access. Opportunities for fishing access exist near many of the area’s dams, spillways, bridges, as well as local power plant facilities.

Floats & Barges

If you’re looking for a fun and unique fishing experience, there are two facilities in the La Crosse Region that offer just that.

Best Dam Fishing Float

The Best Dam Fishing Float is a floating dock located just below Lock & Dam Number 7 on the Mississippi River. The operation offers everything you need for a great day of fishing. A day of fishing on the “Float” includes a pontoon ride there and back – and up to ten hours of fishing. You can bring your own rods and tackle, or they have equipment available for rent. The on-site bait shop also sells food, live bit, tackle, and drinks. The Best Dam Fishing Float is typically open from March through October.

Clement’s Fishing Barge

Clement’s Fishing Barge is located near Genoa, WI just below Lock & Dam Number 8 on the Mississippi River. There’s some serious fishing history associated with this “Barge” as it’s been operating since 1936. A daily fishing package includes a boat shuttle to the barge and back to shore – with the ability to fish for up to ten hours. They recommend you pick up live bait ahead of time, but food and drinks are available for purchase on-site. The Barge is open year-round except for the month of August.

The Rentals

If do-it-yourself is more your style, there are a handful of resources in this region that offer boat, pontoon, kayak, and canoe rentals.

Keep in mind, the State of Wisconsin requires any residents born on or after January 1, 1989 to have a valid boating safety certificate in order to rent or operate a watercraft.

Schafer’s River Rentals

Located on the shores of Lake Onalaska, Schafer’s River Rentals offers a wide range of rental options. Options include boat, pontoon, kayak, and canoe rentals – all of which can be rented for a full day or half day. Schafer’s has rentals that can accommodate up to 15 people.

American Marine

American Marine has five rental locations including one in La Crosse, WI. They offer four different rental options available for half day, full day, and three-day rentals. American Marine has rentals that can accommodate up to 13 people.

Island Outdoors

Island Outdoors offers rentals for canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and water bikes. They are located right on the shores of the Mississippi River – offering consumers the ability to drop right in without having to trailer or tow their rental for use. Island Outdoors also offers customers the ability to take many of their paddled options for a “test-drive” before they buy.

Other Rental Options

There are a few Parks & Recreation and Local Government resources that offer kayak and canoe rentals throughout the La Crosse Region – including Goose Island Park and Pettibone Park which are located on the Mississippi River and Great River Landing which is located on lake Onalaska.

The La Crosse Region is full of opportunity for the outdoor enthusiast – especially for those that enjoy time on the water. Whether it’s conventional fishing or fly fishing, shore fishing or from a boat or kayak, there are options for all. Regardless of what you decide, fishing in the La Crosse area can be fun for everyone.

The La Crosse region has some of the most unique and remarkable fishing opportunities. Reel in memories along the Mississippi River, confluence of rivers, Lake Onalaska, a Dam and barge, and more!

No matter what kind of fishing you want to do, there’s an opportunity for you in the La Crosse Region. Check out our guide for anglers arriving to the area and get ready to fish these lively waters!

What Can You Fish in Spring & Summer?

Kenneth Reaves, an Outdoor Writer, mentions that “just about every species of fish can be found in the area in spring and summer. The walleye are out in full force just after the ice and snowmelt. Head downriver or to one of the many dams if they’re your target fish.

“As the waters warm up, so do the panfish and pike. But if you’re after bass, then late spring, early summer is the ideal time to be casting your line. Both smallmouth and largemouth bass are abundant in the La Crosse waters—largemouth in shallow backwaters and smallmouth in the bigger rivers.

“Channel and flathead catfish also put up an excellent fight in the warmer months, providing a challenge for anglers of all levels.

“Other fish you may just find at the end of your line include sturgeon, sauger, crappie, and sunfish, and trout (depending on which waters you’re fishing in). “

Why Should You Fish in Spring & Summer?

Spring is a time when many anglers in La Crosse County turn their eyes to walleye. Shortly after the ice leaves the river, walleye are running, and the catching can be spectacular. On the Mississippi, many anglers head to the dams where large numbers of walleye congregate. However, there’s often great fishing downriver as well. As waters warm in the spring, panfish action starts picking up, particularly in the flats and backwaters of the Black River, Mississippi River, and Lake Onalaska that tend to warm faster than the moving waters near the river’s channel. The warming waters also make northern pike fishing pick up.

Late spring, and early summer can be excellent times to catch nearly every species of fish – but bass fishing really stands out. Both largemouth and smallmouth can be found in the river system around La Crosse. Look for smallmouth in the main river channels in spots that protect them from the heavy current, such as rocks, downfalls, and wingdams. Largemouth bass is plentiful in the shallow backwaters. Fishing for catfish during the warmest months of the year can be also an exciting affair as both channel cats and flatheads provide some of the best catfishing in the Midwest.

What Gear Should You Bring?

Kenneth Reaves also mentions, “if you’re fishing in the spring or summer, you’ll want to use a rod and reel that’s appropriate for the fishing you want to be doing.

“Take your pick of a fly fishing rod and reel if you want to fly fish for trout. But a normal spinner reel or baitcasting reel and rod will work well for most people if you’re fishing for bass, crappie, walleye, or other fish.

“Other than that, be sure to dress for the weather. Remember to wear a hat and sunscreen in summer. Non-slip shoes are a must, and make sure you have first aid essentials just in case.”

Which Fishing Spots Are Best According to Kenneth Reaves?

Neshonoc Lake

This 606-acre, 11-foot deep lake is about 15 miles outside of the city and offers good fishing opportunities. You can expect to catch largemouth bass, catfish, northern pike, and a variety of panfish.

Depending on the day, the water can be a touch cloudy. Brightly colored lures may have the best luck in these waters.

You can fish from the shore or head out on the boat. Surrounded by trees and marsh, it’s a beautiful spot to spend some time.

Lake Onalaska

Lake Onalaska, 4 miles wide and 40-feet deep at its deepest point, is a reservoir on the Black and Mississippi Rivers. It’s the ideal place to visit with the family in summer, as there’s a variety of activities on offer.

While you’re fishing for walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, or bluegill, the family can go waterskiing, wind-surfing, or bird-watching.

Lake Onalaska also holds the state record for spotted sucker. The big fellow, 20.5-inches in length and weighing 4 pounds 10 ounces, was caught in 2018 in these waters.

Black River

The Black River in La Crosse is a backwater river that offers exciting fishing. The part of the river at MM 695 across from La Crosse is dotted with small islands, providing a variety of hideaways for walleye.

It’s a little more remote than the first two locations, which is ideal if you’re looking for a serene spot without others around.

Participate in the La Crosse Lunker League

Fishing is an excellent choice of outdoor activity to partake in if you happen to have some time to spend in the great outdoors in the La Crosse Region. If you want to add an extra element of excitement to your fishing, you can join the La Crosse Lunker League

It’s simple. Catch a qualifying species in the La Crosse area, take some pictures for size and memories, release your fish, and submit your catch!
