Spring and summer are short and sweet in the La Crosse Region. Want to take advantage of the option to dine outside? Here are five* great places to eat on the water—where there’s an abundance of river views and sunshine.

Moxie’s

The Tiki Bar at Moxie’s in La Crosse is about as tropical as it gets in the city limits. Located on a large Black River beachfront, patrons enjoy yard games, firepits, covered seating, live music, and of course, tropical-themed cocktails. Island and standard American fare make up the tasty menu at Moxie’s.

River Rats

A French Island favorite, River Rats is small in stature but mighty in fun. Pull your boat up to the dock, order yourself an award-winning “Proud Mary,” and share some yummy apps out on the patio. Locals love the wings and the cheese curds.

Pettibone Boat Club

After a day on the Mississippi River, nothing tastes better than a cold beer and a burger at the Pettibone Boat Club in La Crosse. Bring the whole family and watch the boats making their way up the main channel. Planning to head back out on the water after your meal? You can even gas up your boat at the club’s dock.

Huck Finn’s on the Water

If you’re looking for live music and sensational seafood, you’ll want to grab a table on the marina-front patio at Huck Finn’s. The docks are rockin’ all summer long at this long-time French Island establishment.

Red Pines Bar and Grill

A Northwoods spin on seafood and has made Red Pines a Brice Prairie fan-favorite. Beautiful views of Lake Onalaska paired with tasty catfish and walleye sandwiches make for a perfect summer dining destination. On chilly summer nights, cozy up in the heated patio or work up a sweat on the sand volleyball courts.

ENTER TO WIN A TRIP!

By: Sara Walters

With 4 million lights and hundreds of thousands of visitors, The Rotary Lights is an impressively-large holiday display held annually in downtown La Crosse. Here are five things you should know before you go.

Walk or drive

Wisconsin weather is unpredictable, but don’t worry about making the trip to La Crosse even if it’s not exactly warm. You can always drive through the lights if you’re not interested in bundling up for a walk. Turn your radio to the Christmas channel and join the caravan of onlookers from the comfort of your car.

Transportation options

Speaking of rides, you can also view the lights via carriage. Horse-drawn carriages are available most weekends for those hoping to snuggle up and take in the sights. Carriage rides are $20-$30 but if you’re looking for a free option, there are family hayrides on select nights, as well.

Not just lights

Did you know you can see Santa and his reindeer at The Rotary Lights? Santa shows up nightly from 5-8pm until December 23rd, so bring the kiddos to get those Christmas requests in to the big man. Take a peek at his reindeer while you wait at his workshop.

Skate outside

A more recent addition to the event, the Chad Erickson Ice Rink allows visitors to skate in the glow of the lights. Depending on weather (freezing temps required), the rink has nightly hours and rental skates available.

Free fun

Put on each year free of charge, The Rotary Lights asks only for donations to view its spectacular display. Monetary donations or non-perishable food items are encouraged.

Ready to beat the heat this Fourth of July? These four spots feature all you’ll need—food, drinks, water and plenty of fun.

Lake Neshonoc

Pack a lunch and put on your swimsuit! Neshonoc Swarthout Beach is a great family destination for the holiday. With a picnic shelter, a boat landing and of course, a beach, you’ll be able to stay cool and keep the kiddos occupied. Interested in extending your stay? The nearby Neshonoc Lakeside Camping Resort is the perfect place to set up camp or rent a boat.

Riverside Park

Fourth of July is an exciting time of year in La Crosse. Not only is the Mississippi River overflowing with boaters, but the sky is also illuminated by the area’s best fireworks display. Head down to Riverside Park with your blanket and family to enjoy the show, but be sure to come early, this is a popular event!  It’s also the week that La Crosse celebrates Riverfest, so the park is full of vendors, attractions, games and music. You’ll find plenty of activities for all ages, all day long.

French Island

When you think of the 4th, do you think of adult beverages and boat cruises? If that’s your idea of a holiday, head to French Island’s river-themed bars for a guaranteed good time. Places like River RatsTom Sawyer’s, Huck Finn’s and Castaways cater to water traffic and feature delicious food and drink. Dock right next door and slip on your flip flops to join in the fun. Remember to always drive safely.

Black River

If you want a different water scene to explore, try out a few spots along the Black River. Head to Island Outdoors and rent kayaks or canoes for a day of paddling and fun. If relaxing in the shade with a tropical drink in your hand is more your style, try Shenanigan’s Tiki Bar or Moxie’s, both featuring some of the best Black River views in La Crosse.

Not many states have as many natural recreation opportunities as we do in Wisconsin.

And thanks to the DNR, we all have the opportunity to enjoy them on Free Fun Weekend! Here are five things you’ll need to know to take advantage of this fee-free event, held this year on June 2nd and 3rd.

No license required

Fish to your heart’s content, license-free. Do you have a kiddo who has expressed interest in the sport? Try it out before purchasing a license. If you’ve never tried trout fishing, this is the perfect time to give it a shot since there’s no trout stamp required. You can even use free fishing equipment available at more than 50 state parks, DNR offices and partner organizations. Keep in mind, though, that all rules and limits do still apply.

Ride like the wind

This weekend only, all state trail fees are waived! This includes registration fees for ATVs. Gas up your ride and hit the trails, or just enjoy the perks of free vehicle admission at all state parks.

Events galore

Many of Wisconsin’s State Parks will be hosting free events over the course of the weekend. Explore your area park for activities like geocaching, archery, kayak demonstrations, craft vendors and kids activities.

Hashtag it up

Wisconsin State Parks has an exciting initiative that focuses on promoting good health through the great outdoors. When you post photos of your adventure weekend, be sure to include the hashtag #OutWiGo to join the movement.

Discover adventure

Follow Wisconsin DNR on social media to stay up-to-date on all activities happening during Free Fun Weekend. You can also visit their website for specifics on state park events near you.

Between the Bluffs: Beer, Wine & Cheese Festival – Saturday, April 28

Beer, Wine and Cheese. It’s a Wisconsinite’s dream combination. Celebrated each spring in La Crosse, this favorite event is one of the city’s most popular festivals. Here’s what you should know before you shine up your stein and head to the beer tent

The party starts early.

The fun kicks off on Friday night with Taster’s Eve. Enjoy drink specials from 5-11pm thanks to local establishments and vendor partners who have teamed up to bring fest goers a budget-friendly night out. Plus, ticket holders (and their buddies, for only $5) can also use the free shuttle that will loop between stops.

There will be bacon.

After a long day on Saturday, you’ll need to refuel at the Bacon Bloody Brunch on Sunday. Have some delicious bacon and pancakes, while listening to some live music. If you need a little hair of the dog, there will also be beermosas and of course, delicious Bloody Marys.

You can be a VIP.

If you’re lucky enough to snag a VIP ticket, you’ll get all the fun of general admission and more! This purchase gets you on-site parking, admission to the Brewer’s Reception on Friday night, a special gift, access to the VIP tent and best of all, first chance at sampling. That’s right, VIPs are allowed into the festival at 12pm prior to general admission at 2pm.

Safety is top priority.

With close proximity to an assortment of downtown lodging options, festers don’t have to leave town after a day of sampling. There’s also a shuttle available as a responsible transportation option. And no underage drinking is allowed. A valid 21+ ID is required to enter the grounds, no exceptions.

Your glass is for sampling.

Entry to the festival comes with a complimentary, commemorative sampling glass for you to use throughout the day. Expect pours to be 2 ounces or less for beer and 1 ounce or less for wine. You can have as many samples as you’d like, but keep in mind that intoxicated patrons may be asked to leave.

5 Cures for Cabin Fever

Are you done with winter? Us too.

Luckily, La Crosse County has an abundance of activities to help beat that cabin fever while we wait for the weather to warm up. Here are a few ideas to get you off the couch and back into the community.

Burn some energy

A relatively new addition to La Crosse, Jump Start Adventure Park offers indoor fun for all ages. This trampoline park allows you to channel your inner Ninja Warrior and jump to your heart’s content. Try your hand (or foot) at Parkour and test your agility on the Extreme Nets Course.

Shop for antiques

La Crosse is lucky enough to have one of the state’s largest indoor antique shops for shoppers to explore. With three floors and 20,000 square feet of cool collectibles, it’s hard not to find something you like at The Antique Center of La Crosse.

Become a brewmaster

Need a new hobby to get you through the long winter? Visit WineSitter BrewHouse to pick up a beer or wine-making kit. They’ve got all the supplies you’ll need and the know-how to help you. Want a more supervised learning experience? Make an appointment for a start-to-finish wine-making session with the WineSitter’s experts.

Dream of warm weather fun

Summertime sneaks up on us in Wisconsin, so grab your music-loving buddies and plan your trip to Country Boom, the area’s newest music festival. Held at the Maple Grove Venues in West Salem in July, this event boasts an impressive lineup of country acts. Mark your calendars, buy your tickets and wish for warmer weather. It’s almost here!

Imagine the open road

It might be too cold to ride the Coulees, but you can cycle up a sweat at Uptown Cycle instead. Get in the saddle for a variety of classes, from a full-body “pedal ‘n pump” option to more traditional cycling sessions.

Dog-Friendly Destinations in La Crosse County

Traveling with your four-legged friends doesn’t have to be difficult. There are many places to eat, drink and play with your dog in La Crosse County. Check out these five spots for pet-friendly fun.

Houska Dog Park

This riverfront pup park is five acres of fenced-in fun. For owners, amenities like drinking fountains, restrooms, parking and doggie bag dispensers are nice perks.

Van Riper Dog Park

This popular Onalaska park features a sandy play area and owners that are all about cleaning up. There are several obstacles for the adventurous dogs and usually a few toys lying around to share. This park is enclosed, so feel free to let your (friendly) dog run.

Huck Finn’s on the Water

According to Bringfido.com, this warm-weather patio destination welcomes well-behaved four-legged friends for outdoor dining, and even gives them a dish of water. Enjoy a steak or some seafood while your dog relaxes at your feet. Located on French Island, this is a fun summer stop to watch boat traffic and sip a cold drink.

Myrick Park

There are a couple options for pet-friendly activities at Myrick Park, located in the heart of La Crosse. If your dog could use a long walk, head off down the marsh trails for some exercise and an abundance of wildlife to pique your pup’s interest. If you want a more traditional dog park experience, try the small, fenced-in area near the trailhead.

Hixon Forest

Grab the leash and your 4-legged friend and hit the trails! Hixon Forest offers a great hiking experience, especially in the fall when the trees are changing to vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. This is a popular place for people to walk with their furry friends so be sure to have them on a leash. Check out the trails here.
